“At Columbia College, we believe that everything begins with courage: courage to take action despite fear and courage to help others do the same,” said Tamara Burk, Ph.D., director of the Center for Leadership.

This summer, the Center for Leadership at Columbia College is creating a Courage Campaign for the Class of 2022.

The Courage Campaign is designed to help incoming students make connections and build community with each other before they get to Columbia College in the fall to prepare them for academic and social success.

“Our aim is to reduce some of the new – new places, friends, teachers, opportunities – through creating experiences that will empower students to hit the ground running when they get here,” said Burk.

“I know that the transition to college is hard, scary, exciting and exhausting. It’s a whole new world, a whole new culture, and I have seen time and time again what a difference it makes to become part of that culture sooner than later.”

The Courage Campaign is promoting “Courage Challenges” each week for incoming students to complete which will earn them a courage badge during fall orientation. Challenges include posting a favorite courage quote, meeting someone new, calling a professor in desired major and writing a letter to themselves to open when they start in the fall.

These challenges can be completed at any time over the summer. More participants, including current students, alumnae, faculty and staff, are engaging each week.

The Center for Leadership chose to start a courage campaign for incoming students because leadership development starts with courage.  The College’s Four Cs of Leadership (courage, commitment, confidence and competence) are a framework that outlines the kinds of experiences students have over their four years.

The Courage Campaign launched June 1 and will run 90 days through August 29, the first day of classes.
