The Office of Student Activities held a meeting for students interested in the resident assistant, orientation leader and summer camp counselor positions for 2018-2019 on Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.

Kimberly Chamberlain, director of residence life; Sierra Oliphant, director of student activities and Katherine Swartz-Hilton, executive director of community engagement, hosted the meeting, providing background information for each position and bringing with them a group of students currently holding RA, OL or Summer Leadership Institute counselor positions to help answer questions.

Students interested in any of the three available positions are instructed to apply by Feb. 2 at 4:30 p.m. Applications may be picked up and are to be dropped off in the Office of Resident Life and Student Activities in the basement of the Student Union.

“These campus jobs are designed for student leaders- students who are excited to rally other students and campers who could very well end up at Columbia College, too. You [applicants] have to be engaged in the college, the people in it and the experiences and values they want to find here,” said Andrew Herrington, former RA and current student coordinator for the SLI camps.

According to the application and information shared at the interest meeting, resident assistants are student leaders who hold the responsibility of fostering a safe, comfortable environment for residential students. Orientation leaders are students who serve as an ambassador group leader for the college during the summer and fall orientations for first-year students. SLI counselors work during the summer with high school girls, sharing personal leadership journeys and facilitating the week’s activities.

For these positions, Chamberlain said she is looking for flexible, resilient, caring, relational and fun students who are looking to make an impact on other students’ lives.

Applicants will then sign up for an individual interview and must also be available for the group interview to be held Feb. 9 from 2-4:30 p.m.

Along with the application, students must have two reference letters from faculty or staff but are allowed to use the same two letters if applying for more than one position. For any current CC resident applying for the RA position, one of the reference letters submitted must be from the applicant’s current RA.

Students are allowed to be both an RA and a SLI counselor; however, they are not allowed to be both an OL and RA nor an OL and SLI counselor because of conflicting summer dates. Students may apply for all three positions for a greater chance of being selected for one, according to Chamberlain.

Students selected for these jobs will serve among staff throughout the duration of the position, with regularly scheduled meetings and training from the Residence Life, Student Activities and Summer Leadership Institute.

“Learning to foster really good relationships with your supervisors is great professional development. They’re there to help you grow and help you through this leadership opportunity,” Mary-Grace Holt, senior RA and SLI counselor, said about the staff/student partnership.
