“You hear the high school band, Bree?”
Those were my mother’s words when she came home at 7:45 p.m. on a Thursday night after working a 12-hour shift at the hospital. Those were the exact words I needed to hear. Quickly grabbing my phone, I stepped outside out of our apartment, and before I knew it, I was walking in the dark following the music. We live in the country, so there aren’t a lot of street lights. I just wished I would have brought my mace.
Looking in Maps, I saw that it would be a 5 mile walk to Blythewood High School. I was out of breath, covered in sweat, and my phone was filled with missed calls from my mom.
All of a sudden…
I heard sticks hitting snare drums, crashing cymbals, vivid trumpets, and the roar of the crowd that made me run.“Sounds like a football game,” I said to myself. As the band continued playing, I had flashbacks of my high school days in 2014; playing with my friends one last time. No, not friends. Family.
Back when things were fun.
Back when everything was about the music and nothing else.
Back when one of my best friends, Aaliyah, was still alive.
When the music stopped, I opened my eyes. The sounds of the drums and horns still beating in my head.
I failed to reach my destination, so I turned around and started to walk the now, four miles back. But not for a second did I forget about that sound, that crowd, and that love for music. Returning to my home, I knew I was in for it.
As I walked through the door, I saw my mother walking out of her room. Knowing her question already, I was prepared to make myself apologetic. I mean, that’s the least I could’ve done right? “Girl, where you been at?” We stood there for a minute and she said “You followed the music didn’t you?” Trying not to break eye contact with her, I nodded and looked around. Unfinished homework, uncooked food, and cold tea. Slowly, I lifted my head back up to her and said “Yes and I always will.”
Now, I am not saying you should leave your house in the middle of the night -forgetting about everything- to follow the sounds of music in the dark. Whatever your dreams are, follow them. Life is a roller coaster ride filled with many ups and downs; but just remember whatever stage you are on, never forget about your dreams.
Even if you decide to leave them, they will never leave you.
