Godbold Gym is a place where athletes can train and prepare and a place where students, staff and faculty are able to go for a place to workout.

The gym was built in 1971 and was named for Lucile E. Godbold, a professor of physical education for 60 years at Columbia College.

Godbold consists of a weight training area, a trainer’s office, a pool and a gymnasium. The Fitness Center is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. The pool is open Tuesdays from noon-1:30 p.m. , Wednesdays from 9:30-10:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 12:00-1:30 p.m.Photo courtesy of Columbia College Athletics

Lifeguards are on duty for the pool, but visitors must work out at their own risk in the fitness center. Trainer’s hours are varied depending on their availability because their main priorities are the athletes. The athletic director asks that others stay out of the way when sports teams are using a part of the fitness center.

Kellyann Stubblefield, the athletic director, has held her position at Columbia College for seven years. When asked about her job here at Columbia College she said, “Oh I love it! It’s a fantastic job.”

“When I first arrived here, there was no place for [athletes] to lift or workout,” Stubblefield said. She has many more plans for athletics, such as renovations for the tennis courts and drainage and irrigation for the soccer field and pavilion.

“We use the gym every morning. We use it for games and for extra practice,” Monee Anderson, a first-year majoring in sports psychology and a member of the Columbia College volleyball team, said. She feels like the gym is a safe and judgment-free place to workout.
