College seniors are approaching the deadline for graduate applications to be submitted for upcoming fall semesters.

Even if college seniors are starting to look at grad schools now instead of over the summer, there is still time. “Most graduate school deadlines fall from Oct. 31 to Dec. 1,” according to College Cures’ website.

The first step is to research graduate schools and the school’s program. Then, determine which schools you want to apply to. Once you have a list of schools you are applying to, look at all requirements for the application process.

Applications can vary tremendously from graduate program to graduate program,” Beth Luberecki, writer for The Washington Post, said. “So if one asks for certain test scores, make sure you have them. If there’s a word limit for the personal statement, stick to it.

Going into October, students should be actively taking care of their application process in several ways.

Devote the first one or two weeks in October to taking your graduate school exams. If possible, schedule them during your fall break or on the weekend,” Kathryn Randolph, writer for FastWeb, an online resource for paying and preparing for college, said.

“Request official transcripts from your undergraduate institution,” The Princeton Review, a tutoring, test prep and college admission services company, said. “Send your recommenders supplemental materials (like your resume, personal statement, etc.) that they can use as a reference. Make contact with students and professors at your prospective schools. Arrange a campus visit if you can.”

According to Randolph and The Princeton Review, in the months following October, students should be gathering the final pieces of their applications, recruiting others to look over their personal essay and verifying recommendations have been sent.

Help for navigating the graduate application process can be found on campus at the Center for Career Coaching and Professional Development, Monday 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.; Tuesday 3 p.m.-7:30 p.m.; Wednesday 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and Thursday 3 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

C3PD will also be hosting a graduate school week Nov. 7 through Nov. 12. Details can be found on Koala Connections under the “My Career” tab.
