Columbia College’s Mom’s Day tradition has caused distress among some students.
Every year, the college hosts a Mom’s Day and a Dad’s Night to honor students’ parents, guardians or influential mentors. With Mom’s Day on Nov. 12, students have expressed concern about the idea.
“It’d be different if it was called Women’s Day,” Cheyenne Hayes, first-year communication studies major, said. “But it’s called Mom’s Day, which seems to ostracize students without mothers or connections to their mothers.” Hayes lost her mother in July of this year.
Students are also concerned that the Office of Student Activities mails out invitations to their permanent residences. The students complained that they may or may not want to invite their legal parents to such events, but mailing invitations does not give them that option.
The Office of Student Activities released an email apologizing to any students who felt intruded upon or offended by the celebration.
“Please know we had the best of intentions to include your loved ones in your life at Columbia College,” Emily Fox, director of student activities, said in an email to students. “Our deepest sympathy to those who may have felt hurt by the mass mailing of our invitations.”
Students now have the option to opt-out of mass mailings to their permanent residences by emailing [email protected]
Mom’s Day is still scheduled for Nov. 12 from 3 to 6 p.m. All Columbia College students and their guests are welcome and encouraged to register for the event online at http://columbiacollegesc.wufoo.com/forms/mh81mvh15o1nxn/.
