Columbia College’s Philanthropy Leadership and Community Engagement (P.L.A.C.E.) organization sent 10 P.L.A.C.E. Fellows to the Lead 365 National Conference in Orlando, Florida, Nov. 1-3, 2018. This conference is to prepare anyone, from college students to new professionals, to be a leader or lead 365 days a year. The Lead 365 Conference focuses on individual growth, leadership knowledge, enhanced skill building, workforce preparedness and new professionalism.

A few students who attended gave their perspective on this event:

“This was my first conference and it was amazing. I’m so thankful to have this opportunity to go meet students just like us. I realized there were so many more people out there than just South Carolina. I’ve learned a lot and I can now take what I learned and use it in my everyday life” – Carol Horton, first-year elementary education major

“Lead 365 was an amazing experience that I am so grateful for. At the conference, I learned that to be a great leader you need to be vulnerable. A lot of the times we put on brave faces and hide behind our problems. But Lead 365 taught me that as a leader we have to share our stories and learn that it’s okay to show emotions. We are all humans and we connect through emotions and experience.” – Mekel Mock, first-year psychology major

“The Lead 365 conference was a wonderful opportunity to experience, especially at a young adult age. I enjoyed being able to learn of different experiences from people all over the United States. The conference truly helps others to feel engaged in leadership and never lets you forget to have fun while doing it” – Millennia Burnett, sophomore

“The Lead 365 Conference was a very impactful gathering of talented individuals and inspiring speakers. Most of the talks revolved around the idea that leadership can be traced down to positivity and perspective. Leadership is not just about knowing what to do but also to know why one is doing something and allow others to see the vision. In order to be capable of doing that, a leader must have a determination and be open-minded and respectful towards different points of view and people. This conference also allowed me to learn to evaluate myself, which can always be useful.” – Litzel Garcia, sophomore speech-language pathology major

“The Lead 365 Conference was absolutely amazing. I was able to talk to some amazing presenters, learn more about my own leadership abilities and network with college students from all over the country. I feel like I learned so much there that I will be able to use in my various leadership positions here on campus.” – Hunter Huggins, junior studio arts major

“If I had to sum the Lead 365 conference up in one (hyphenated) word, I would say life-changing. Meeting people from all over the country was a moment I will never forget. This past weekend at this wonderful conference in Orlando, Florida, helped me gain confidence in myself, embrace my failures and realize that I am enough. As I was inspired by a multitude of motivational speakers, I realized that I too have the skills and abilities to speak publicly and lead those who look to me for guidance. From doing a spontaneous speech in front of a stranger to speaking in a room of over 400 people, I grew tremendously. I feel blessed and honored to have had the opportunity to attend this amazing conference and hope to attend again next year.” – Jasmine Carter, junior communication studies major
