In the second appointment with “La Grande Storia”, tomorrow at 21. 20 on Rai 3, Paolo Mieli talks about young people in Italy in the 1950s. A generation passing between the war years and the economic boom years, a society marked by a very traditionalist culture, with a family that is the custodian of safe and immutable values and with well-defined roles assigned to men and women. A society in which social differences are strongly marked: Southern Italy, where pockets of poverty remain, is marked by migration to an industrial North where modernity is beginning to appear. Customs and morals in Italy in the 1950s in which the Catholic Church made its full weight and influence felt. The model of chastity for young women and a sexuality that should never be named. Finally, the generation of baby boomers, the children of the “economic miracle”, who in the Italy of the sixties will take possession of the public scene. Music, fashion, customs, rebellion against a world of adults in which young people cannot and do not want to recognize themselves anymore. La Grande Storia is a program of the Culture and Educational Directorate of Rai.

A visit to the Uffizi Museum in Florence with the historian of the art of Antonio Paolucci. It is proposed by the appointment with the series “Museo Italia”, broadcast tomorrow at 19. on Rai 5. We start from Piazza della Signoria, the symbolic heart of the city. In front of the copy of Michelangelo’s David, symbol of Florentine freedom and good governance, the Loggia dell’Orcagna or dei Lanzi is for visitors an open-air Uffizi room: rich in marble and bronze sculptures from both the Renaissance and the classical antiquity, allows every passer-by that experience of Beauty, which anticipates the encounter with the treasures of the Uffizi, a few meters away. The Uffizi palace, whose name indicated precisely the offices of the bureaucratic power it hosted, was built at the behest of the Medici in a few years by Vasari who, as Professor Paolucci recalls, wrote that he had built it “above the river and almost in the air” . In the Uffizi rooms each work is a masterpiece, as in an ideal anthology each pictorial work testifies to a specific moment in the history of art, a technique, a way of conceiving the world. From the “Polyptych of Badia” by Giotto to the Annunciation by Simone Martini, from the Adoration of the Magi by Gentile da Fabriano to the “Madonna and Child with St. Anna” by Masaccio and Masolino, to the Paolo Uccello of the Battle of San Romano we see taking shape , in its highest examples, humanistic art. In the Botticelli room, Professor Paolucci explains how in the comparison between the works of the Florentine painter with the Fortinari Triptych by Hugo van der Goes we can understand the two Renaissance of Europe: Flemish naturalism and perspective vision, Italian classicism. And more masterpieces of the sixteenth century from Michelangelo’s Tondo Doni to Raphael, a painter of Italian beauty, forward in the history of Italian painting to the drama of the hypnotic gaze of Caravaggio’s Medusa. In the sign of the relationship between architecture and landscape, Professor Paolucci leads into the Vasari Corridor, the extraordinary covered air road of almost 1 kilometer that connects the Uffizi to Palazzo Pitti: the private path of the Medici to reach the palace passing over the Arno, above Ponte Old as if they “rode the city”.
