Stay well in cold and flu season

Now is the time of year when we’re all concerned with trying not to be the person coughing or sneezing all through class, short of traveling in a plastic bubble.

One of the most important things to do to stay well is to get enough sleep. Sleeping rejuvenates your mind and also keeps your immune system strong, according to Harvard Medical School’s web page. The less you sleep, the more likely you are to develop cold or flu symptoms.

Another precaution you can take against getting sick is to make sure to wash your hands. This is especially important before and after meals and after being near someone who is ill.

“I constantly wash my hands and Clorox my room to prevent myself from getting sick,” Bronwyn McDaniel, CC sophomore dance and psychology major,  said.

As an extra safety net, carry hand sanitizer with you. Alcohol-based sanitizers like Germ-X work best.

It never hurts to also do things to boost your immune system. Taking vitamins, particularly Vitamin C, drinking Airborne or Emergen-C and eating leafy greens can boost your immune system.

“Taking vitamins and drinking water and keeping away from people who are sick are the main ways that I stay healthy,” Jaena Dominguez, CC first year biology major, said.

Also, make sure to stay hydrated. Your body is more than 60 percent water, which means you need to make sure you drink enough. Water and juice would be the best things for you. This can be hard during cold months when our bodies crave things like hot chocolate and coffee; but unless we want to be the ones sneezing and coughing in class, we need  to drink water.

Stock up on supplies just in case you do get sick. No one wants to have to make a trip to the pharmacy  when she’s sick. Stock up on tissues, especially ones with lotion, chicken soup (Ramen counts), Vicks vaporub and anything else you may need.

If you get sick, be sure and be courteous to those around you. Sneeze and cough into a tissue because sometimes your arm isn’t enough of a barrier.
